The agrifood innovation platform

Countries Tunisia
Start date 01/01/2022
End date 31/12/2023
Status Ongoing
Objective / Goal

The agrifood system in the Mediterranean region faces several challenges, including its extreme vulnerability to climate change, its constant struggle between quantity and quality of production, and its management of resources in the face of both. Another concern is the erosion of the Mediterranean diet, a process that has had undesirable impacts on health and on social, cultural, economic and environmental trends in the Mediterranean region. To address these challenges, various governments and institutions in the region have come together in a project to find innovative ideas, train young farmers, and scale up existing solutions that support regenerative farming in the Mediterranean.

Partners

The governments of Italy, Iraq, Morocco and Tunisia; the Future Food Institute (Italy); The Investment and Technology Promotion Offices of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization; the Study Center of the Mediterranean Diet “Angelo Vassallo” (Italy); Generation Ag (Greece); KM ZERO (Spain)

Beneficiaries Local institutions and smallholder farmers in the Mediterranean area.
Activities To achieve its objective, the project will focus on: 1. Identifying innovative and regenerative ideas in the food supply chains of the Mediterranean diet by organizing an international award contest for “Innovative Ideas and Technologies in Agribusiness”. The aim is to identify solutions that could lead to social, environmental, and economic benefits in the agriculture and agroindustry sectors; 2. Developing capacities of young farmers in the Mediterranean area to help them drive the ecological transition and develop resilient agrifood economies to sustain prosperous societies. Trainings will be delivered, adopting the advanced learning programme “Food & Climate Shapers” designed by FAO and the Future Food Institute; 3. Scaling up innovative solutions within the framework of regenerative agriculture and agroecology in the Mediterranean area.
Impact The project is contributing to the FAO “Four Betters” Strategic Framework, in particular towards achieving a “better production” and a “better life”.
