ABSTRACT

In this official report of the First Session of the Working Group on Aquaculture of the Commission for Inland Fisheries of Latin America (COPESCAL), held in Santiago de Veraguas (Republic of Panama) from 18 to 22 April 1983, after the presentation of the status of aquaculture development in the participant countries, the main discussion was centered on the need for a multidisciplinary approach in production-oriented research, and on the lack of personnel trained at different levels to develop this sector in Latin America. The recommendations that emerged from the discussions were grouped as follows: aspects of planning and organization, research and generation of information, and training as the main group, pointing out the existing interrelationship between these three groups.
