The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAO RAP), Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and Singapore National Parks Board (NParks) are organizing a webinar to launch a new publication on monitoring and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance in bacterial pathogens from aquaculture. Register for the webinar here.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) development may compromise food security, food safety and animal welfare, and in turn, the protection of livelihoods and the sustainability of aquatic species and fisheries. Evidence-based AMR interventions will therefore contribute to the overall resilience of aquaculture-dependent livelihoods and economies.

To improve the quality, quantity and overall cohesiveness of initiatives on AMR surveillance in aquaculture across the region, FAO RAP, SFA and NParks led the collective efforts of the region to develop the monitoring and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance in bacterial pathogens in aquaculture. This publication is part of a collection of regional guidelines on monitoring and surveillance of AMR, antimicrobial use (AMU) and antimicrobial residues in food and agriculture initiated by the FAO RAP.

As a regional guidance document, this material supports countries in planning and improving AMR data generation, management, and utilization while also reinforcing the efforts to harmonize such initiatives across the region. It is envisioned to contribute towards improved antimicrobial stewardship and enhanced aquatic animal health, and ultimately, better aquaculture production in Asia and the Pacific.

This publication was produced with kind technical and funding assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
