Performance of Veterinary Services (PVS) evaluation mission in Nepal
Through USAID support, FAO and the Department of Livestock Services, participated in the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH)’s PVS evaluation mission field trips in Chitwan and Pokhara from 21 to 25 September 2023. The mission was organized to follow up on the PVS first evaluation in 2008 and gap analysis in 2011.

Indonesia receives FAO appreciation for strengthening animal health and food security
FAO participated in the peak event of the 187th Livestock and Animal Health Services Month in Boyolali, Central Java, on 22 September 2023 hosted by the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture. This event serves as momentum for all stakeholders in the livestock and animal health sectors to work together to strengthen the national food security programme by leveraging the potential of local livestock feed to increase farmer welfare and improve animal husbandry in Indonesia. Among others, the events included: exhibitions of high-quality livestock products as well as appreciation and acknowledgment of relevant stakeholders in the livestock sectors. On this occasion, FAO gave Letters of Appreciation to the Ministry of Agriculture for its achievements in controlling HPAI in Indonesia for more than a decade since the first HPAI outbreak in 2005 and for its efforts and contributions in preserving the germplasm of Bali cattle during the last thirteen years.

Participation in the FAO regional management meeting in Bangkok
FAO ECTAD Regional Manager Dr Kachen Wongsathapornchai participated in the FAO Regional Management Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand. In the panel discussion on South-South Cooperation (SSC), he discussed challenges and opportunities in implementing the FAO-China SSC regional project on transboundary animal disease control in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. Together in the panel were FAO Representatives in Indonesia and Timor-Leste, and Sri Lanka.

Case control study on dog vaccination concluded
A case control study to evaluate the social and epidemiological impacts of long-lasting collars deployed during dog vaccination campaigns in Bangladesh has been conducted at Savar and Narshingdi municipalities between 8 and 16 September 2023. The study was conducted by FAO and the University of Glasgow in collaboration with Department of Livestock Services, Communicable Disease Control (CDC) and DGHS thanks to USAID for the funding support. Over the course of eight days, a total of 2 153 dogs were vaccinated, microchipped and marked by collaring, with 1 146 dogs at Savar and 1007 dogs at Narshingdi.

WHO's third bi-regional advocacy meeting on risk mitigation in traditional food markets in the region
FAO ECTAD Regional Laboratory Coordinator Filip Claes presented ECTAD’s live bird market surveillance efforts at WHO's third bi-regional advocacy meeting on risk mitigation in traditional food markets in the Asia-Pacific region. The event, held from 19 to 21 September, was convened to engage Members in improving traditional food markets in the region and to gain their commitment to supporting local-level authorities to promote needed change.

FAO continues to enhance Bangladeshi capacity in disease surveillance
A six-day training on Upazila-to-Community (U2C)-II poultry farm efficiency was conducted on from 16 to 21 September 2023, facilitated by FAO through USAID funding, to review and institutionalize the previously developed U2C initiative with Department of Livestock Services (DLS) for participatory disease surveillance, promotion of responsible antimicrobial use and outreach to farmers for better farm management with improved biosecurity and vaccination practices. Twenty DLS officers were trained by Dr Provash Chandra Goswami and Dr Lenin Dey from DLS to improve knowledge and skills of U2C teams who have received the U2C-I training.

Advocacy meeting on Community ASF Biosecurity Intervention (CABI) programme in North Sulawesi
On 13 September 2023, FAO, along with the Ministry of Agriculture, held an introduction and advocacy meeting on the implementation of the CABI programme in North Sulawesi, with the funding support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and Rural Affairs of Republic of Korea (MAFRA ROK). This meeting introduced the concept of CABI design to all key stakeholders, obtained their support to implement the programme, and identified several options for pilot areas. In addition, this meeting also discussed the threat of ASF and its impact on North Sulawesi, including an analysis of its challenges in controlling the disease. Key stakeholders of the meeting were the Provincial Livestock Office of North Sulawesi, Disease Investigation Center Maros, Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park, Nature Conservation and Ecosystem Agency Manado, as well as the Livestock Office of Minahasa, Minahasa Selatan, Minahasa Utara, Tomohon, and Kota Manado.

ASF disease response training in North Sulawesi 
The Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) and FAO conducted training on ASF response in North Sulawesi from 15 to 16 September 2023, in response to the confirmed death of pigs due to ASF in Minahasa and Sangihe districts, as well as the reported death of wild boar in Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park this year. This training was funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of the Republic of Korea (MAFRA ROK) and MoEF Indonesia. A total of 52 participants from North Sulawesi and Gorontalo Provincial Livestock Services, Directorate of Species and Genetic Biodiversity Conservation of MoEF, North Sulawesi Natural Resources Conservation Center, Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park, as well as District Livestock Services of Bone Bolango from Gorontalo Province, and District Livestock Services from North Sulawesi Province attended the training.

Training of trainers of veterinarians for school education programme on rabies
FAO, funded by USAID, conducted three lots of orientation training to veterinarians to prepare them as resource persons for school education programmes on rabies prevention and control in September. The trainings were conducted in Pokhara (Gandaki Province), Kathmandu (Bagamati Province) and Chitwan (Bagamati Province) where around 100 veterinarians participated. Similar training was conducted in July in Dhangadhi (Sudur Pashchim Province). These trained veterinarians are being mobilized to boost awareness for school students in various districts.

Guidelines development meeting to empower education personnel on zoonoses awareness
On 15 September 2023, FAO, Ministry of Agriculture and Transformational Teacher Center West Java held a meeting to draft guidelines for an empowerment programme for teachers and education personnel of sekolah penggerak (school movers) on zoonoses awareness for primary and secondary schools in West Java Province. From the meeting, all parties developed an action plan related to the programme, one of which is to use rabies as a model to kick off the programme in support of celebrating World Rabies Day in 2023 thanks to USAID for the support.

Webinar on rabies prevention for sekolah penggerak teachers in West Java
Continuing the agreed action plan between the FAO, Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, and Transformational Teacher Center West Java, held an online webinar on rabies prevention for sekolah penggerak (school movers) teachers with USAID’s support on 22 September 2023. Around 250 people, including school principals and teachers of sekolah penggerak in primary schools and junior high schools across West Java Province, attended the webinar. At this event, Ministry of Agriculture explained what rabies is and how to prevent it, while FAO delivered information related to FAO and efforts to eradicate rabies. This webinar aimed to improve teachers’ and educational personnel’s knowledge of rabies. Following this webinar, information, education and communication (IEC) materials will be distributed to teachers for use in teaching students about rabies and its threats.
