Regional consultation on veterinary epidemiology

FAO organized a regional consultation on veterinary epidemiology capacity development from 29 April to 2 May 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand. The meeting brought together veterinary epidemiologists from seven Member Nations to discuss solutions on how to strengthen field veterinary epidemiology training and networking in Asia, support research to create evidence for policies as well as share knowledge and resources. Representatives from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Thailand and Viet Nam also shared their experiences and lessons learned in managing Field Epidemiology Training Programs for Veterinarians (FETPV) at country and regional levels. As a result, participants agreed to form a regional veterinary epidemiology network known as ENTRVST (Epidemiology Network for Training, Utilizing Veterinary Workforce and Evidence, and Sharing for Trust). Thanks to USAID and DTRA for the support.

Networking and future directions workshop by APCOVE
FAO regional and country teams, as well as representatives from countries with FAO-supported Field Epidemiology Training Programs for Veterinarians (FETPV), from Cambodia (CAVET), Indonesia (PELVI), Lao PDR (frontline), the Philippines (FETPV), Viet Nam (AVET) and Thailand (Regional-FETPV), participated in the networking and future directions workshop held by the Asia Pacific Consortium of Veterinary Epidemiology (APCOVE) in Bangkok, Thailand, from 26 to 28 April 2023. APCOVE introduced its training resources to countries with field epidemiology training programmes and all attending organizations. The training materials will be available to all after the project concludes.

One of the results from the workshop is that the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) committed to developing a roadmap for improving the animal health workforce that encompasses veterinarians and other animal health professionals. They will adopt APCOVE e-learning training materials to enrich FETPV Indonesia training courses, train facilitators and mentors, implement basic training for animal health government officers, and to contribute to continuing professional development (CPD). MoA will also establish a One Health epidemiology network in the country.
