Webinar on the potential use of oral rabies vaccination in dogs in Indonesia
On 3 February 2024, a webinar organized by FAO, MoA, and the Australia-Indonesia Health Security Partnership explored the potential use of Oral Rabies Vaccination (ORV) for dogs in Indonesia. The online event, supported by the Australian government and USAID gathered 500 participants, including officials from the Ministry of Health, chief veterinary officers, field veterinarians and others from all over Indonesia. Key discussions focused on using ORV as an alternative for mass dog vaccination, addressing challenges with free-roaming dogs. Based on joint studies carried out in Bali and other countries around the world, ORVs are more cost-effective, safe for both target and non-target species, easy to administer and effective in improving vaccination coverage.

Regional meeting to prevent and control ASF in wild pigs
African swine fever was discussed as conservation and biodiversity issues in a regional meeting held in Pattaya, Thailand last 24 to 25 January 2024. Discussions focused on preventing and controlling ASF in wild pigs in Southeast Asia. The meeting was held as ASF continues to threaten 11 species of small and endangered populations of endemic wild pigs in the region. Wild boars or feral pigs (Sus scrofa) play a critical role in the transmission and spread of ASF between wild and domestic pigs. Representatives from the academe, wildlife conservation organizations, livestock and wildlife sectors from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam shared experiences and best practices. One of the major outputs of the meeting, which was supported by the United States of America's Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), was the creation of short and long-term work plans for ASF prevention and control in wild pigs.
