GLOBEFISH 40th Anniversary

GLOBEFISH Anniversary

This year, the FAO GLOBEFISH project celebrates its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of analysis and dissemination of data and publications on sustainable production, trade and markets.

Happy 40th!

Forty years is a long time, and a lot has changed in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. The globalization and liberalization of markets, coupled with economic development in developing countries, rising domestic demand, and the expanding importance of aquaculture, have profoundly influenced the fisheries industry and, more particularly, fish trade and markets. In light of regional and global trade expansion, the fisheries industry has become increasingly dependent on unbiased and credible market information.

Since 1984 the FAO GLOBEFISH project has been fostering transparency, market access and traceability, facilitating the exchange of information among the industry, governments, academia, and stakeholders globally, adapting to constantly evolving contexts and needs. During this period, the unique collaboration between the FAO GLOBEFISH project and the FISH INFONetwork (FIN) has resulted in tangible cascading impacts throughout all regions.

The FAO GLOBEFISH marks 40 years around the sun with a fresh new look. The project's visual identity has evolved considerably since its launch in 1984, and to commemorate this milestone, we have designed a new layout for FAO GLOBEFISH publications and its website for easy access to information and navigation.

To commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the FAO GLOBEFISH project, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI) of FAO will host a two-day event entitled “40 Years of the FAO GLOBEFISH Project: Key Highlights and Way Forward” on the 18 and 19 September 2024, at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.
