What is the BSF?

The Benefit-sharing Fund (BSF) of the International Treaty is an essential element of the Funding Strategy and of the Multilateral System of Access and Benefit-sharing. The BSF is the operational mechanism for receiving, utilizing and sharing the monetary benefits arising from the Multilateral System and plays a catalytic role in international cooperation on plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA).

Established by the Governing Body and operational since 2009, the Benefit-sharing Fund has supported actions (see: Our Projects) in 67 developing countries through four project cycles, with each cycle building on lessons from the previous ones. In 2019, the Governing Body adopted the Operations Manual for the BSF, which brings together resource mobilization, allocation and disbursement in an integrated manner.

The BSF contributes to the implementation of the United Nation’s Agenda 2030, including the achievement of the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
