Hybrid Event, 27/06/2022 - 29/06/2022

The FAO/GEF project “Lifecycle Management of Pesticides and Disposal of POPs Pesticides in Central Asian countries and Türkiye” (POPs project) was launched in October 2018.

It aims at the environmentally safe disposal of up to 900 tonnes of POPs and obsolete pesticides and remediate a pesticide-contaminated site (Component 1); strengthen the institutional and regulatory framework for managing pesticides throughout their lifecycle (Component 2); increase the successful uptake of alternatives to chemical pesticides on key crops (Component 3); and share project lessons (Component 4).

The project beneficiary countries are Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Türkiye. The POPs project has established its regional Project Steering Committee (PSC) to facilitate regional coordination and joint decision-making. The PSC is to monitor the quality and timelines of the execution of project activities and of the delivery of outputs.

The PSC also has the function to propose adjustments and provide guidance to ensure project implementation achieves defined outputs.

The PSC is further an opportunity to provide participants through workshops and a field visit with additional background on various topics central to the project such us safeguarding of obsolete pesticides and pesticide use and gender.
