Nature-based solutions related to apiculture and wild pollinators

Hybrid Event, 24/05/2023

The FAO Subregional Office for Central Asia is organizing a hybrid event “Nature-based solutions related to apiculture and wild pollinators” on 24 May 2023 from 09:00 – 17:30 Baku time.

Pollination is an ecosystem service, which is crucial for forestry, production of crops, and the maintenance of terrestrial biodiversity. Almost 90 percent of the world’s flowering plants are pollinated by insects and other animals, and it is estimated that about one-third of the global food produced benefits from animal pollination. Apiculture is a major provider of pollination services and its role will be acknowledged during the meeting, however the often-underestimated importance of wild pollinator species will be emphasized.

The event will bring together apicultural, silvicultural and plant production experts and intends to highlight available nature-based solutions related to apiculture and wild pollinators in Central Asia and worldwide, discuss their usefulness and applicability in the region and identify any accelerators and inhibitors of wider adoption. To ensure consideration of a wide range of perspectives, the multi-stakeholder approach will be employed for dialogue at the event. The invitees will come from the following stakeholder groups: public sector, private sector; academia/research; donors; NGOs; social movements and community-based organizations, inter-governmental and multi-lateral institutions.
