SUMMARY

Progress in Nutrition and Diet Development research at FARS is progressing slowly due to lack of essential equipment and research facilities. The analytical laboratory has no fume hood and no spectrophotometer, and electrical and water supplies plus adequate drainage. Some modern equipment and supplies have been ordered and delivered but analysis must still be done as guest workers at BAU. Research morale is affected and Dr. Bhuiyan's absence as CSO-BFRS means no senior experienced SSO is present to guide and supervize the young SO's on the staff of FARS.

The major effort of FARS has been focused upon seedstock generation and improved polyculture techniques for aquaculture--programmes which have been very successful and have tended to emphasize in this research station upon known or better techniques rather than efforts to expand and improve research facilities, equipment and personnel of underdeveloped programmes of the station. More emphasis must be placed upon finishing the NDD laboratories, the diet testing facility and the experimental feed mill equipment for diet manufacturing and diet testing.

The inordinate delays in letting tenders for laboratory equipment and for the repeatedly rejustified and agreed upon list of feed mill equipment has emasculated progress in NDD and has stifled incentive to plan, implement, and conduct meaninful nutrition research. Planning has continued and some research results have been accumulated only under difficult and trying circumstances with most assays being done for major nutrient components of the National Feedstuffs Survey in poorly equiped laboratories of BAU. Commendably, the survey was expanded from 50 to 83 nationally available feedstuffs and all gross nutrient assays done. All materials were named both locally and scientifically and were entered upon INFIC forms for International feed data bank registration. FRI has requested observor status in the INFIC system to share information on feedstuff nutrient profiles used for feed formulae.

Administrative decisions on fund allocations have been consistantly delayed by concern for planned activities at BFRS, RFRS, and MFRS. As a result it has been impossible to schedule completion of the nutrition laboratories, diet testing facilities, and the experimental feed mill equipment purchase. NDD activities will remain miniscule until these items are ordered and delivered.

Plans for NDD operations for the proposed two year extension were made and can be found in the body of the report and in the Annexes attached.
