FAO's Data Lab

FAO’s Big Data platform to track the COVID impact on food chains and food insecurity

The COVID-19 pandemic put over a third of the world's population on a lockdown which caused severe repercussions in consumer activity and food chains. FAO’s Data Lab created a Big Data tool to help the organization and its stakeholders monitor the COVID-19 impact on food chains with real-time analysis and visualizations. To achieve this, new sources of information had to be considered that are openly accessible on the web (in line with the spirit of Big Data) such as news, tweets and crowd-sourced prices. The resulting data were organized in structured datasets, then visualized in interactive maps, plots, and tables, synthesizing the underlying phenomena.
