Managing pesticide wastes, supporting green crop production in Central Asia and Türkiye

Component 1: Disposal

Component 1 promotes better practices on the management of obsolete pesticides stocks. Work is based on FAO's Environment Management Toolkit (EMTK) series and includes:

  • Updating national inventories of obsolete pesticides and pesticide-contaminated sites. This allows to define stocks with highest risks to health and the environment and prioritise them for disposal;
  • Disposal of up to 900 metric tonnes of obsolete (POPs-)pesticides in the project countries. The disposal activities are pilot projects and are to enable national capacity for further national disposal work;
  • Pilot projects to demonstrate remediation of pesticide-contaminated sites;
  • Introduction of systems to manage pesticide containers through their life-cycle as well as strategies to handle agricultural plastic wastes.
Key results so far under Component 1
  • Three national inventories finalised
  • National disposal option assessed in Azerbaijan
  • Safeguarding of 217 MT of obsolete pesticides in Azerbaijan tendered
  • Baseline on current management of empty pesticides container established
  • Regional disposal strategy developed
