Fire management forum – Wildfires beyond forests

• Press release: New FAO mechanism will help countries manage the risk of wildfire

This full-day forum seeks to broaden the scope of wildfire management beyond forests to the full suite of sectors including infrastructure, health, transport, tourism and other sectors impacted by damaging fires. The forum will also seek to confirm the need for more relevant data collection on the incidence, causes, sources, motivations, and drivers of damaging fires. This data will underpin stronger review and analysis on reducing wildfire risks, through integrated fire management, and stimulate better approaches through fire risk governance. A concept of integrated fire management has been developed from past, new and emerging ideas and will be presented in the proposal 'Assuring the Future of Forests with Integrated Risk Management (AFFIRM) Mechanism.' This global platform is a key contribution by the Republic of Korea to strengthen countries' capacities to implement integrated fire management.

Objectives

1. Enhance public awareness of the importance of forest fire management and impacts of forest fires on people and the environment. The need for shared risk governance by engagement with local communities to identify and implement solutions will be emphasized.
2. Introduce innovative technologies and state-of-the art equipment for fire management, including the use of remote sensing to find fires and other 'smart' applications.
3. Accelerate multisectoral cooperation and integrated approaches for preventing and managing forest fires, including the concept for a global platform. Examples of cross-boundary fire management from the European Union will be presented.
