Climate change is a serious issue in the Republic of Tajikistan. To this end, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) invited a wide group of partners to a climate finance workshop on 24-25 August in Dushanbe. The workshop was part of a Green Climate Fund (GCF) readiness project, implemented in close cooperation with the Committee for Environmental Protection under Government of Tajikistan.

This year’s theme for the Day is "Rising up from drought together". Indeed, drought is one of the most destructive natural disasters in terms of the loss of life. By 2050, droughts may affect an estimated three-quarter of the world’s population. Action must be taken now to reverse this trend!

Recognizing the pivotal role of the private sector in low-emission and climate-resilient development, through the second GCF readiness project, FAO and the Government of North Macedonia put particular emphasis on unlocking the potential of local private companies in climate investments, through educating them on climate change issues, climate finance, and the use of technologies and innovation for climate change adaptation and mitigation.

A recent report revealed that retail sector alone accounts for 13 percent of 931 million tonnes of food waste that was generated in the world in 2019. The causes of food waste at this stage of food supply chain often include fluctuations in seasonal supply of fresh food, changes in consumer demand, inappropriate sizes or packaging, visual defects or damage to a food item or the packaging, esthetical considerations for fresh produce or lack of consumer understanding concerning the date markings to name a few.

FAO conducted a comprehensive training on measurement, monitoring and reporting of food losses for key national stakeholders in Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, aimed at supporting countries in developing effective food loss and waste reduction strategies and monitoring their progress towards achieving SDG target 12.3.

FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia organized a consultation workshop in Chisinau, Moldova, where key government officials, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment (MARDE), Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure (MEI), the National Food Safety Agency (NFSA), representatives of the private sector and research, discussed and agreed on a national strategic approach to food loss and waste (FLW) reduction in the country.
