Despite the world-wide increase of food availability, there are still around one billion people undernourished. This is far above of the target of MDG 1. There is now substantial evidence that malnutrition has life-long negative impacts on productivity and income-generating potential of the population.

ICN2 Follow-up: Overcoming Malnutrition in Agenda 2030 – LIVE BROADCAST

One year after ICN2, The Director-General of FAO will be joined by the Chair of CFS, the Vice President of IFAD, the Special Representative of the Secretary General for Food Security and Nutrition and Coordinator of the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement (SUN), and the Co-Chair of the Global Nutrition Report, to present the comprehensive global nutrition architecture that is emerging from the ICN2 outcomes and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

FAO will announce its new vision and stance for a Food Systems approach to eradicate all forms of malnutrition.

Seven Nations will share national or regional perspectives, and stakeholders will be invited to dialogue on priorities, opportunities and next steps.

Integrating nutrition into the curricula of agriculture education institutions: Strengthening human capacity to promote nutrition-sensitive agriculture

In many countries, agricultural development has traditionally focused on raising productivity and maximizing production of cereals, making it difficult for people to access foods that are richer in protein and minerals, such as milk, meat, fish, eggs, beans, vegetables, and fruits, which are often more expensive than cereals. The lack of nutrition training of agricultural workers is acknowledged globally as a significant barrier to combating malnutrition through agriculture and food systems.

HLPE consultation on the V0 draft of the Report: Sustainable agricultural development for food security and nutrition, including the role of livestock

In October 2014, the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS) requested the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE) to conduct a study on Sustainable Agricultural Development for Food Security and Nutrition, including the role of Livestock.

As part of the process of elaboration of its reports, the HLPE is organizing a consultation to seek inputs, suggestions, and comments on the present V0 draft. This open e-consultation will be used by the HLPE to further elaborate the report, which will then be submitted to external expert review, before finalization and approval by the HLPE Steering Committee.

Sustainable Energy Technologies for Food Utilization in Emergency Contexts

This conference is addressed to high-level experts in the field of humanitarian action, as well as of energy, food security and nutrition. The “Sustainable Energy Technologies for Food Utilization” (SET4food) is a project co-funded by COOPI-Cooperazione Internazionale, Politecnico di Milano, Fondazione Politecnico and the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department (ECHO).

The specific objective of the project is to enhance the response capacity of humanitarian actors in identifying and implementing efficient and sustainable energy technologies for food utilization. The project takes into account the combination of food utilization and energy availability in formal and informal settlements for refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs). Practical tools to improve food utilization have been developed, and in particular: i) a decision support system (DSS) to facilitate the identification of the most appropriate energy technologies for a certain context; ii) guidelines of energy technologies for food utilization. Then pilot projects in Somalia, Central African Republic, Lebanon and Haiti have been implemented, in order to test the DSS, as well as innovative solutions. Finally, a set of in-presence trainings and public events have been raising the attention and improving the response capacity of humanitarian actors.

Honeybees provide a wide range of benefits to humans from honey, other bee products, pollination of food crops and ecological services. Beekeeping is practiced around the world, and can provide a valuable source of income to people in developing regions with relatively little investment. However, apiculture faces a number of challenges that can impact on the health and survival of the colony. What can we do to create sustainable conditions for agriculture and apiculture to coexist and to benefit from each other?
