Advanced liquid biofuels for net zero, the significance of sustainability - Side Event at the European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE)

Virtual Event, 09/05/2022

As stated in IRENA’s low-carbon pathway, a five-fold increase in production capacity of biofuels is needed by 2050 to meet current international climate targets. As competing demands for biomass are also projected to increase over this period, innovative feedstocks and technologies need to not only be researched and developed, but also deployed and promoted by adequate policies. Advanced biofuels  the form of biofuels that have grown from these legacy sustainability concerns over competing uses for resources, such as land and biomass, and also GHG emission reduction targets.

The side event looks at the inherent significance of sustainability in advanced biofuels’ production and use, and aims to share experiences in order to draw useful lessons for sustainable expansion of the sector to contribute to net-zero goals. The roundtable discussion will consider sustainability challenges for advanced biofuel value chains, how they can be overcome in future operations, and what can be done to clarify common misconceptions.

The side event is organized as part of the GBEP work on advanced liquid biofuels. In 2021, the Global Bioenergy Partnership undertook a collection of experiences in advanced liquid biofuels across four continents. The collection takes a deep-dive into a selection of different experiences in advanced liquid biofuels to detail their variety not only in terms of technology and development phase but also in their benefits, drivers and barriers.

The event was organized in collaboration with ETA Florence Renewable Energies.
