YUNGA and GBEP announce the release of an educational booklet to promote sustainable bioenergy among youth

26/07/2024

Rome, Italy – The Youth and United Nations Global Alliance (YUNGA) and the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) have launched a new educational booklet designed to educate youth about the critical role of bioenergy in combating climate change and supporting a sustainable development.

Bioenergy, derived from organic matter, is currently the largest renewable energy source, accounting for more than half of all renewable energy supply today. Unlike fossil fuels, bioenergy reduces greenhouse gas emissions, helping to slow global warming and climate change. However, it is crucial to ensure that bioenergy is produced sustainably to avoid negative environmental impacts, such as deforestation and competition with food production.

The Energy Challenge Badge Bioenergy Supplement aims to educate young people about how bioenergy reduces greenhouse gas emissions and fosters sustainable development. The booklet covers essential topics, including various sources of bioenergy, its environmental and socio-economic impacts, and methods for producing and using bioenergy sustainably.

By understanding these aspects, young people can deepen their appreciation for bioenergy and be inspired to take actionable steps in their daily lives to conserve energy and promote renewable sources. Structured to engage through interactive activities, the booklet offers practical, hands-on exercises that are both educational and enjoyable. It also includes guides, useful information, and additional resources to help teachers and youth leaders develop a focused curriculum on bioenergy and adapt activities to their specific contexts.

The Energy Challenge Badge Bioenergy Supplement is divided into five main sections:

  • Understanding Bioenergy: Basic facts about the importance of bioenergy.
  • Bioenergy Sources and Impacts: Major bioenergy sources and their environmental impacts.
  • Producing and Using Bioenergy: Processes involved in bioenergy production and usage.
  • Bioenergy Sustainability: Connections between bioenergy, sustainability, and development.
  • Take Action: Practical ideas for saving energy and raising community awareness.

“When we provide access to knowledge and resources, we create opportunities for young people to learn, act, and lead. Through the Energy Challenge Badge Bioenergy Supplement, we enable young people to understand the complexities of climate change and energy systems and instill in them a sense of responsibility to drive meaningful change in their communities,” said Tiziana Pirelli, GBEP Coordinator.

The new booklet is now available for download and can be accessed through the FAO Knowledge Repository here
