A Technical Consultation on Legal Frameworks and Economic Policy Instruments for Sustainable Commercial Aquaculture in Africa South of the Sahara was held at Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania from 4 to 7 December 2001. It was attended by 16 Members of FAO from south of the Sahara and by one observer from an Intergovernmental organization and seven observers from the private sector.
The Consultation examined the major constraints to the development of sustainable commercial aquaculture in sub-Saharan Africa. It reviewed the status and potential of commercial aquaculture, examined the markets and trade, considered the policy options and the framework of legislation favourable for the development of commercial aquaculture. In addition, the Consultation agreed on a set of Conclusions and recommendations for action at national, regional and international levels which point the way forward.
Amongst the recommendations, the Consultation requested FAO to continue its efforts in assisting the sub-Saharan countries in increasing awareness of the potential of aquaculture and upgrading the skills of the members to enable them to take full advantage of the existing potential.

Une Consultation technique sur les cadres juridiques et les instruments de politique économique à adopter pour promouvoir une aquaculture commerciale durable en Afrique subsaharienne, s’est tenue à Arusha, République-Unie de Tanzanie du 4 au 7 décembre 2001. Seize représentants des pays membres de la FAO originaires du sud du Sahara, un observateur d’une organisation intergouvernementale et sept observateurs du secteur privé y ont participé.
La Consultation a examiné les principales contraintes au développement de l’aquaculture commerciale durable au sud du Sahara. Elle a passé en revue le statut et le potentiel de l’aquaculture commerciale, examiné les marchés et le commerce, étudié les options de politique et le cadre juridique favorables à son développement.
De plus, la Consultation a émis une série de conclusions et recommandations à suivre à l’avenir, aux niveaux national, régional et international.
Parmi les recommandations, la Consultation a demandé à la FAO de poursuivre ses efforts à aider les pays subsahariens à augmenter la prise de conscience du potentiel existant en aquaculture et à améliorer les compétences de leurs ressortissants afin de les rendre capables de tirer le meilleur bénéfice de ce potentiel
